A New Official Entrant into the Spanish Lineage
The love and affection saga for animals is quite obsolete not only in the Indian communities but World over although, pet keeping is still uncommon in many societies. One can easily dredge up 8 out of 10 people who strongly fuse with animal sentiments irrespective of them being domestic or stray. Our enduring care for animals, especially for our pets, stems essentially from a heart full of compassion and mercy that fathoms the inability of fauna to take care of themselves.
We want to extend a big happy felicidades to the Spain Congress of Deputies that approved a new rule centring animal welfare. This new law came into effect on the 5th of January, Wednesday in Spain and stresses on recognising the pets at home as living and sentient beings. We clearly know what ‘living’ means, as with ‘sentient’ it’s dictionary meaning is - responsive to or conscious of sense impressions. Now the stumper is that haven’t we, the pet lovers, been considering pets as living and sentient both? Let’s dive into understanding this a little deeper.
Living and Sentient
Let’s take an analogy of teachers who, in order to be respected by pupils, as knowledge givers, primarily need to be knowledgeable themselves. Agree? Similarly, our pets are capable of being loved only and only because they themselves are primarily so full of love and emotions. This quality of them, as being truly adorable makes them sentient. Evidently, they can feel and also, to certain extent, express their feelings in actions. This very fact makes one pet far apart from being just an ‘object’ that belongs to somebody.
Need of the Law
Now that we gaze that our pets are not merely our belongings, let us fairly understand why did this fantastic law come in effect in Spain. When a nuclear family, the pet lives with, goes through a turmoil or is running in disputes resulting in separation, the only one who explicitly goes through a massive emotional drain, also with its inability to express freely verbally, is our pet. Eventually, this challenge intensifies when the decision of ‘Who has the pet?’ is to be made. We do not realise how we hamper our pets psychologically. The fact is that they are super sensitive and it gets extremely heart rending for them during such incidents. Therefore, this law works in the best interest of the pet’s wellbeing, whether it is a dog, cat, fish, turtle or birds. The family court, irrespectively, will have to minutely look into the matters of Pet custody battles.
Positives for Pets
What exclusively strikes us is that the Pets who had to be abandoned or deserted will now not have to go homeless. A full proof decision of who will be the custodian of the pet will determine a secure future of the pet. The good part is that this law is not only functional in Spain but also actively enforced in different Nations including France , Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal.
Animal Freedom and Welfare
Many of us express, converse and articulate our thoughts and beliefs about securing the future of animals. While in some families it is a trend that is believed to have passed down from generations to generations, some people are likely to realise their affection for animals all of a sudden, who then go on to owning a pet. In any case, it is important to deeply understand the concept of Freedom and Welfare of animals, whether domesticated or wild. Let us identify with the following points:
Every animal, general, exotic or rare; is rightful to have access to nutritious food and fresh water. While we see a lot of activists working towards this end, it also implies to each of us nonetheless to take up responsibility towards these animals as a part of nature.
Animals have the rights to shelter or appropriate resting area with good environment, where they can peacefully seat themselves without any bother.
It is also in their best interest to be disease free, vaccinated and healthy by all means.
Expressing normal behaviour is the next in this list. All animals are rightful towards operating naturally at their will. Whether it is running, jumping and playing around or barking, hooting, squeaking or meowing, they stand rightful towards behaving how they wish to!
The last yet very impactful for animal wellbeing is providing them with conditions that ensure minimum stress and an accepting environment. This freedom entitles them to having a better and longer life.
If we profoundly think, the love we feel for our pets is quite inclusive of the overall care and affection we feel for the whole of nature.(Disclaimer: The information contained on this blog is just for informational purposes only.
